Each April, Earth Day inspires us to reflect on the importance of protecting the environment. At J-U-B Engineers, Inc., that commitment is woven into everything we do, all year long. Our Environmental Services Group (ESG) takes the lead in designing creative, sustainable solutions, and this Earth Day, we’re proud to showcase projects that highlight our dedication to collaboration, innovation, and environmental stewardship.
The iconic Rainbow Bridge on SH-55 in Idaho is undergoing essential repairs, with a strong focus on safeguarding its surrounding ecosystem. Spanning the Payette River, a vital habitat for diverse wildlife, the bridge serves as a perfect example of balancing infrastructure needs with environmental protection.
Environmental experts conducted seasonal surveys to assess bat and bird activity in the area, carefully timed to align with wildlife patterns. These proactive assessments are instrumental in ensuring construction plans minimize disruptions to sensitive species. This work exemplifies how environmental research supports both infrastructure and habitat preservation.
In Lewis County, Idaho, aging culverts along Hole’s Creek were obstructing natural water flow and impacting aquatic life. To address this, J-U-B partnered with the North Highway District (HD) to replace the failing culverts with structures designed to improve waterway connectivity.
The Environmental Services Group collaborated with federal agencies to evaluate the impact on ESA-listed steelhead trout and other species of concern. Designed according to NOAA’s Guidelines for Salmonid Passage, the new culverts ensure safe navigation for fish while enhancing stream functions. This project reflects how thoughtful planning and design can restore natural ecosystems and benefit watersheds.
Washoe County, Nevada, is the home of the Rock to McCarran Reach Project, which demonstrates the power of environmental stewardship. With goals to reduce flood risks, restore ecosystems, and enhance recreation, the project embodies sustainable progress.
The Environmental Services Group conducted a thorough environmental assessment, identifying ways to enhance fish habitats and reconnect floodplains. Community feedback emphasized the importance of preserving wildlife and natural spaces, which remains central to the project as it moves forward. This initiative is a prime example of balancing human and environmental needs for long-term benefits.
On the Big Wood River near Sun Valley, Idaho, J-U-B secured funding to rehabilitate a failing diversion dam, transforming it into a fish-friendly and sustainable structure.
The project included innovative design features like a rock ramp with resting places for fish, a low-flow channel for migration, and riverbank restoration to reduce erosion. These efforts ensure the dam can support both irrigation needs and the local fish population, illustrating how smart engineering creates a balanced solution for people and wildlife.
These projects reflect J-U-B’s core values in action, integrating smart engineering with a deep respect for the environment. Whether it’s protecting wildlife during bridge repairs or restoring fish passage in rural Idaho, our teams are committed to solutions that serve both people and the planet.
This Earth Day, we celebrate the work we do—and the passionate professionals behind it—who help build a better, more sustainable future.
Happy Earth Day from all of us at J-U-B!
