Umatilla Entry Monument: A Collaborative Design and Engineering Success

The City of Umatilla, Oregon, partnered with J-U-B to enhance its entrance monument, resulting in a design that is both functional and aesthetic. This project reflects years of collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving. J-U-B played a key role in bringing the vision to life, utilizing hand-drawn sketches, structural design, and 3D renderings and models. It showcases J-U-B’s adaptability, technical expertise, and dedication to working closely with clients to achieve their goals.

Design Evolution

Concept plans to enhance Umatilla’s entryway began in 2018. Over the years, J-U-B worked closely with the City to develop multiple concepts, refining the design to meet changing needs, budgets, and leadership preferences. The design of Umatilla’s entrance feature underwent multiple iterations, evolving from a simple monument to concepts incorporating water elements before ultimately transforming into a concrete monument inspired by natural basalt formations.

J-U-B’s ability to quickly adapt to the City’s evolving needs was key to the project’s success. The team effectively communicated ideas through hand sketches, 3D computer models, and physical 3D-printed models, ensuring alignment with the City’s vision at every stage. In 2022, the project was bid under a traditional design-bid-build approach but was put on hold when costs exceeded the budget. In 2023, J-U-B guided the City in adopting the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC) method, bringing Cascade Civil Corp on board for value engineering. This collaborative and creative approach allowed J-U-B to deliver a final design that met the City’s needs while maintaining aesthetic and functional integrity.

Innovative Design Through Collaboration

A key highlight of this project was its iterative design process. J-U-B’s team leveraged multiple tools, including:

  • Hand-drawn sketches to explore initial concepts.
  • Multiple rounds of digital 3D renderings to refine and present design options.
  • Physical 3D-printed models to provide tangible representations of the monument.
  • Structural design expertise to ensure feasibility and durability.

The successful completion of the Umatilla entrance monument showcases teamwork and creative problem-solving. J-U-B guided the City through alternative delivery methods, adapted designs to budget constraints, and communicated effectively. From concept in 2018 to completion in 2025, our team’s expertise delivered a monument that reflects Umatilla’s identity and enhances its community space.
