The Ashley Valley Watershed Flood & Irrigation Project received funding under USDA’s Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act (WPFPA), Public Law 83-566 and would provide flood damage prevention and reduction, agricultural water management, and recreational facilities for Uintah County, Vernal City, and Naples City in Utah. The project would prevent runoff, erosion, and sediment damage to areas downstream of the Coal Mine and Yellow Hills Sub-basins, accommodate existing flood control benefits of the Ashley Central Canal, as well as address water loss from Ashley Central Canal by piping the canal to conserve water lost to seepage, evaporation, and inefficient irrigation delivery systems. The watershed area covered by the project amounts to nearly 46,000 acres.
J-U-B’s Environmental Services Group (ESG) performed field surveys (wetland delineations and biological surveys), coordinated cultural surveys, completed all biological and water resource inventories for the project, and completed all NEPA compliance (i.e., Environmental Assessment) for the project per NRCS Watershed Management guidelines. J-U-B participated in regular and numerous coordination meetings with municipal entities, NRCS, and other agencies to obtain NEPA approval.
